Go BARRY

The problem

I spent years inside the control room of a large bus company. When roadworks, breakdowns or incidents hit, the information supervisors need is scattered across council systems, highways feeds, traffic APIs and phone calls - while passengers wait and services drift. I built the tool I wished had been on my desk.

The build

Go BARRY pulls four live data feeds - Street Manager roadworks, National Highways incidents, TomTom traffic and HERE geocoding - into one disruption picture, matched against bus routes: 231+ routes across six regions in its current dataset. Supervisors get an operations centre for managing incidents; the control room gets a 24/7 wall display; and a companion breakdown guide walks staff through engineering issues step by step.

The result

Built in full and deployed. Go BARRY has not yet been used operationally - it's ready for a bus operator to put it through a live trial.

The human bit

This is the most personal project on the site: control-room software designed by someone who sat in the seat. Every screen answers a question I used to have to answer by phone.

Under the hood

React Native with Expo on the front; Node.js and Express behind it; Supabase for data and Convex for real-time sync. Street Manager webhooks over AWS SNS; National Highways DATEX II. Deployed at gobarry.co.uk. Status: trial-ready - awaiting an operator.
